Portable Machine Shop

Uintah Machine presently has two portable machine shops, each equipped with a milling machine, a lathe, a welder, a torch, and rather complete complement of hand and power tools, cutting tools and tooling, safety equipment, nuts & bolts, set screws, all-thread, taps, drills, etc. They each have a small overhead crane inside, as well.

The larger of the two is built in an 8 X 40 freight container. This shop is equipped with a lathe which swings 22" x 60" between centers, and a vertical/horizontal milling machine. The smaller one is 24' long X 8' wide, and has a rather unusual lathe that will accept a 28" diameter face plate, as well as all the usual chucks and collet holders. Each machine shop is usually equipped with a hydraulic drill and power unit when we send it out, along with whatever other equipment we think we will need on a particular job.

While we built the first shop for our own convenience when we are on long jobs with insufficient machine shop services in the vicinity, as frequently happens here in the west, our customers have found what an advantage it can be to have a shop on site during an outage. Of course, most power plants have a shop of their own, but during an outage, they always seem to have their machinists busy doing something else, so that there is no one left to take care of the little things that are constantly cropping up. And beside all this, the inventory of parts saves untold trips to the local hardware store. More work gets done with less people, and less time.
